葬 列 ―― A Funeral Procession ―― 
男が朝のコーヒーを持ってコンビニエンス・ストアから出てくると、奇妙な葬儀の列が近くの墓地に向かっている様子が見えた。黒塗りの車体の長い霊柩車から50フィートほど後にもう一台の黒の霊柩車が続いている。
２台目の霊柩車の後には革紐をつけて犬を引いた男。その男からちょっと離れて一列に並んだ男たち200人ほどがぞろぞろと歩いてくる。男は好奇心を掻き立てられ、つつしみ深い物腰で、犬を連れた男に近寄って尋ねた。
「ご愁傷様でございます。話しかけてはお邪魔でしょうが、このような形式の葬儀を今まで見たことがありません。どなた様のご葬儀でしょうか」
「私の家内です」
「奥様に何が起こったのでしょうか」
「私の飼い犬が妻に襲いかかって噛み殺してしまいました」
彼はさらに訊ねた。「それで、２番目の霊柩車にはどなたが？」
「私の義母です。義母が妻を助けようとすると、この犬が今度は義母に襲いかかったんです」
悲痛な思いから二人の間にはしばし沈黙がながれた。
「私にその犬をお貸しいただけないでしょうか」
「結構です。順番待ちです。この列についてください」
A man was leaving a convenience store with his morning coffee when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery.
A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking single file.
The man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?"
"My wife's."
"What happened to her?"
The man replied, "My dog attacked and killed her"
He inquired further, "But who is in the second hearse?"
The man answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog turned on her."
A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two men.
"Can I borrow the dog?"
The man replied, "Get in line."
