信心深いカウボーイ ―― The Baptist Cowboy ―― テキサスからワイオミングに越してきたばかりのカウボーイがバーに入って、ビールをマグカップで３杯注文した。彼は店の奧に坐りこむと、３個のマグカップを一つ一つ飲み干していった。ぜんぶ飲み終わると、カウンターに戻って、さらにビールを３杯注文した。
バーテンがカウボーイの席にいって説明した。「ご存知でしょうけど、マグカップにビールを注いでから、放っておくと気が抜けるんです。だから一つずつ注文したほうが、美味しくいただけますよ」
「あのねえ、僕には弟が二人いるんです。一杯はアリゾナの弟に、もう一杯はコロラドにいる弟のためなんです。僕等がテキサスの親元を離れるとき、約束したんです。これから独りで飲むときにゃ、３人が一緒になって飲んでいた頃のことを思い出すため、こんな風にして飲もうぜって。だからこうやって、弟たちのために一杯ずつ、そして自分のために一杯、やってるんです」バーテンは、結構な習慣だ、と納得してとカウンターに戻った。
カウボーイは定期的にバーにやってきて、いつも通りの方法で、つまりマグカップを３杯ずつ注文しては、順番に飲んでいた。
あるとき、カウボーイがバーに入ってきて、注文したのはマグカップ２杯だけだった。常連の客達はそれに気がついて、シーンと押し黙った。
彼が２回目の注文にカウンターに来たとき、バーテンが彼に声をかけた。「あなたの深い悲しみに立ち入るつもりはありませんが、お身内のご不幸にお悔やみを申し上げます」
カウボーイは初めは怪訝な顔をしていたが、すぐに明るい顔になって笑顔に変わった。
「そうじゃないんです、みんな元気です」といって、彼が説明した。「ただ、家内と僕はバプテスト教会の信者になったもんですから禁酒しなければならなくなっただけです。でも弟たちには何の関わりもありませんから」
A cowboy, who just moved to Wyoming from Texas, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.
The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, "You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you
bought one at a time."
The cowboy replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in Arizona, the other is in Colorado. When we all left our home in Texas, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I'm drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself."
The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.
The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss."
The cowboy looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs.
"Oh, no, everybody's just fine," he explains, "It's just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking. Hasn't affected my brothers though."
