遺産の行方 ―― Misfortune ―― 
独身のダンは父親の家に住み、家業を手伝っていた。病弱な父親が死ねば自分が財産の相続人になることに気がついた彼は、財産を共有する伴侶を探さねばなるまいと判断した。
ある日の晩、投資家の会合で、彼は今までに見たこともない美しい女性を見つけた。ものごしが自然で飾らない美しさに息を呑んだ。
「僕はありきたりの男に過ぎません」そういってダンは女に話しかけた。「だけど父の命はあと数年なんです。そして２百万ドルの資産を相続することになるんです」
心を動かされた女性はダンに名刺を求めた。それから３日後、女はダンの継母になっていた。
Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune.
One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.
"I may look like just an ordinary guy," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die and I will inherit $200 million."
Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother.
