カトリックの犬 ―― Catholic Dog ―― 
ムルドゥーンは アイルランドの田舎で愛犬を伴侶にして暮らしていた。ある日、愛犬が死んでしまい、彼は教区の神父さんを訪ね、「可愛そうなこいつのためにミサのお祈りを捧げていただけませんか」と頼んだ。
パトリック神父は「すまないねえ、教会の中では動物のためにミサを挙げられないんだ。ここを下って行くと、信仰のことはとやかく言わないバプティストの教会がある。そこで何とかしてくれるでしょう」と話した。
「そんじゃ神父さん、直ぐに行ってみます。お祈り代に５０００ドルばかり献金すれば十分でしょうか」
とたんにパトリック神父は金切り声を上げた。「ムルドゥーンさん、どうして初めから、お宅の犬がカトリック信者だったと言ってくれなかったのかね」
Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with only a pet dog for company.. One day the dog died, and Muldoon went to the parish priest and asked, 'Father, my dog is dead... Could ya' be saying' a mass for the poor creature?'
Father Patrick replied, 'I'm afraid not; we cannot have services for an animal in the church.... But there are some Baptists down the lane, and there's no tellin' what they believe. Maybe they'll do something for the creature.'
Muldoon said, 'I'll go right away Father. Do ya' think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for the service?'
Father Patrick exclaimed, 'Why didn't ya tell me the dog was Catholic?
