弁護士の墓

―― A Strange Story ――

　アリエンナーという名前の弁護士が他界した。友人が彼の墓石に「アリエンナー、正直者、そして弁護士ここに眠る」と刻むよう石屋に注文した。

　それを聞いた石屋は、そんな碑文では通りがかりの通行人に、この墓には３人の死者が埋葬されているかのように混乱させる恐れがあると主張した。そして代わりに次のような碑文はどうかと提案してきた。
「正直者の弁護士、ここに眠る」

　そうすれば名前を入れなくとも、墓石の横を通りがかった人は誰だって、すぐに墓の主が分かるというのだ。
「こりゃアリエンナー」

A lawyer named Strange died, and his friend asked the tombstone maker to inscribe on his tombstone, "Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer."

The inscriber insisted that such an inscription would be confusing, for passersby would tend to think that three men were buried under the stone.

However he suggested an alternative:

He would inscribe, "Here lies a man who was both honest and a lawyer.

That way, whenever anyone walked by the tombstone and read it, they would be certain to remark:

"That's Strange!"
